Cost&Wage is an independently operated website that helps readers explore and compare average wages, long-term wage changes and consumer price levels across OECD economies.

Our purpose is to make comparable public statistics easier to find, read and understand. Instead of requiring visitors to work directly with statistical databases, API responses or large data tables, Cost&Wage organises selected observations into searchable country profiles, historical charts, side-by-side comparisons and focused calculation tools.

What Cost&Wage Provides

Cost&Wage currently focuses on two main areas:

• PPP-adjusted average annual wages in constant prices
• Comparative consumer price levels across eight spending categories

The website allows visitors to:

Where the Data Comes From

The wage and consumer price observations presented on Cost&Wage are retrieved from public statistical datasets made available through the OECD Data Explorer and related OECD data APIs.

The primary source areas used by the website include:

• OECD Comparative Price Levels

Where practical, Cost&Wage provides links to the relevant OECD indicator or dataset so that visitors can review the underlying source directly.

Individual datasets, metadata and source materials may be subject to their own terms, licences and third-party rights. Anyone intending to reproduce or redistribute source observations should review the terms attached to the relevant OECD dataset.

How We Process the Data

Cost&Wage independently organises, caches and displays selected observations from the source datasets.

The website may calculate:

• One-year, five-year and ten-year wage changes
• Differences between selected observations
• Historical wage peaks
• Changes from a historical peak
• Consumer price differences in index points
• Common-year comparisons
• Results produced from user-selected calculator inputs

These calculations, charts and explanations are produced by Cost&Wage. They are not OECD publications, OECD analysis or official OECD conclusions.

Cost&Wage preserves the source observation year and missing-data status. A missing observation is not treated as zero, automatically replaced with a nearby year or silently interpolated.

Source data may be revised by its publisher. When an observation is revised, the corresponding value or calculation on Cost&Wage may change after the next successful review and update.

Our Relationship With the OECD

Cost&Wage is an independent website and is not part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Cost&Wage is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, authorised by or operated on behalf of the OECD.

References to the OECD name and OECD datasets are made solely to identify and attribute the public statistical sources used by the website. Cost&Wage does not use the OECD name as its own brand and does not claim ownership of OECD source data, publications, trademarks, logos or visual identity.

The website’s organisation, calculations, charts, explanatory text and visual presentation are independently produced. Any interpretation, error or omission introduced by Cost&Wage is the responsibility of Cost&Wage and should not be attributed to the OECD.

How Often the Data Is Updated

Cost&Wage checks the relevant source datasets on a recurring basis, generally at least once each month.

When the OECD publishes a new observation or revises an existing observation used by the website, Cost&Wage aims to update the affected pages after the data has been retrieved and validated.

An update is made only when a relevant source value or metadata record has changed. Updates are not guaranteed to occur on a particular day, and Cost&Wage is not a real-time data service.

The latest year available for wage data may differ from the latest year available for consumer price data. The relevant observation year is displayed alongside each value.

Our Data Principles

Cost&Wage follows several basic data presentation principles:

• Source observations and Cost&Wage calculations are distinguished from one another.
• Observation years are displayed with the relevant values.
• Percentage changes use specified start and end observations.
• Consumer price differences are expressed in index points unless explicitly stated otherwise.
• Missing observations remain unavailable.
• Different data years are not described as strictly simultaneous.
• Wage and consumer price statistics are not combined into a single country score.
• Corrections are made when a display, calculation or explanatory error is confirmed.

Although calculations and generated explanations are reviewed for consistency, errors may still occur. Visitors can report suspected errors through the Contact page.

What Cost&Wage Does Not Provide

Cost&Wage provides general statistical information. It does not provide personal financial, tax, legal, employment, salary-negotiation, immigration, relocation or investment advice.

An average wage is not a median wage, minimum wage, starting salary, take-home salary or guarantee of individual earnings.

A consumer price index is a relative statistical measure. It is not a personal household budget or a direct estimate of how much a particular visitor will spend.

Wage and price observations should not be combined into a verdict about which country is better to live or work in.
