What this calculator does
This tool turns a U.S. dollar reference amount into an index-based benchmark for another OECD economy, using the consumer price level index (United States = 100) for the selected year and category.
Inputs explained
- Country — one of the 38 OECD economies.
- Year — 2024, 2023 or 2022 (the reported price-level years).
- Category — one of the eight consumer price categories.
- U.S. Reference Amount — a planning reference in USD, not a real bill.
Calculation formula
Benchmark = U.S. reference amount × (country index ÷ 100) Difference = country index − 100 (index points, never percent)
Worked example
With a $100 U.S. reference and Germany's 2024 overall consumption index of about 92.7, the benchmark is $100 × 0.927 ≈ $92.70 — roughly 7.3 index points below the U.S. level. The output is an index benchmark, not a price tag.
How to interpret the result
An index above 100 means the category is priced higher than the U.S. reference; below 100 means lower. Differences are expressed in index points, never percent. It describes relative price level for a whole category, not the price of any specific item.

- Category-level indices hide item-level variation.
- Only the three reported years are available; other years are not estimated.
